I never thought I'd ever find the once incredible and very bloody playable Saturn port, well, actually unplayable but, here I am, perfectly at peace with knowing I'll probably never boot it up again. Where the Saturn port shines is obviously in its extra content (the Stratos, 2-player head to head time trials etc), its affordability and the fact that it's an impressively polished alternative home console take on one of the finest video games ever created - but its many bells and whistles don't have a hope of papering over the fact that compared to the port produced by M2 (I stress this again because - like the quality of the visuals - the significance of this too cannot be overstated) the Saturn version is compromised as fuck. Yes the Saturn version has excellent control and yes the PS2 version could be described as being twitchy in comparison - but regardless of that in my eyes (hands) it's still much better than the Saturn port(s). I refuse to play this game at low volumes.ģ. I realise that preferences for the Saturn's flashy live band arranged versions of the original chip generated tracks and rerecorded voice tracks will be subjective, but for me the real arcade BGMs are harder, funkier, mixed better, tighter and just enhance the game immensely. The significance of this cannot be understated.Ģ.
It's truly arcade perfect for all intents and purposes. I cut my teeth on the Saturn port back in the day and ended up mastering and loving every moment of it, but when I very belatedly got around to obtaining the PS2 bonus disc version these are the main reasons it blew my mind:ġ. The M2-produced PS2 port is the finest way to play Sega Rally outside of owning an original arcade cabinet.
